I'm a PhD student in the Electrical Engineering department of Sheffield University. I've been a fairly keen rower from when I was at Warwick, where I was a member of the men's eight until having to go off to Cambridgeshire as part of my Masters. In Cambridge, I joined the City of Cambridge boat club, and rowed for the City Vth eight in the bumps, which went up from the third to the second division that year (1996).
Naturally, the first thing I did on arriving in Sheffield was to join the Sheffield University Rowing Club. I'm also a member of the City of Sheffield rowing club, which means I can keep rowing over the summer. I've entered one regatta as a sculler, where I discovered that I can't manage to scull in a straight line. Oops. Hopefully I'll do better in my next one, which is the BUSA regatta on the 2nd of May - I'm entered in the men's novice sculls.
The best rowing link I've found is Rachel Quarrell's Rowing Service with links to loads of rowing clubs, race summaries etc.
My first degree is from Leicester University from where I achieved an *ahem* 2:2 in Physics with Astrophysics (If you think Astrophysicists are intelligent, you should meet me). Despite this, I still managed to persuade Warwick University to let me do a Masters there.
